What is the American Dream?

A happy way of living that is thought of by many Americans as something that can be achieved by anyone in the U.S.by working hard and becoming successful. This the definition for the American dream, but what does it really mean to want the American dream. For many decades the United States of America (U.S.A/America) has been known as a place of opportunity, where your dreams come true. People from all around the world move to America in the search for a better life, most immigrants get to America believing it is going to be easy. America might be the place for opportunity but if you want success you gotta work hard.

Americans are all about wanting success, but not all reach it. Life in America it's hard, considering the fact that it is the land of opportunity yet not everyone has a chance to really succeed. The term “American dream” was introduced in 1931 by James Truslow Adams, the concept of American dream means, life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, regardless of social class or circumstances of birth or at least this was what it really meant back then. Now days the American dream is equivalent to having a family and being successful, also known as having money.

The funny thing is that according to Truslow your social class doesn't matter when it comes to the American dream, yet it is harder for a poor man to have his American dream and reach the top. I'm not saying it is impossible, I am just saying that the opportunities given to him are not the same opportunities given to someone from the middle class, it is like he is set for failure, and this must change. In the book “The Great Gatsby” by Fitzgerald we can clearly see that Mr. Gatsby is living the American dream. He was a poor man, yes, and he got to the top, even though it might have been with the help of illegal business, and I go back to what I was saying before. It is hard for a poor man to reach the American dream, but why does this happens, when we all deserve the chance to have success and opportunities to help us have success.
